Audition Against Type: Make the Stretch Believable

Build a truthful audition against type through objective, relationship, status, physical behavior and evidence already in your reel.

The breakdown on your laptop calls for a ruthless department head, while your reel mostly sells you as the warm best friend. You set the pages beside a coffee cup and drop your voice by half an octave. On the second read, your shoulders lock and the character starts to look borrowed. Then you stop the reader from reaching the door, and the scene suddenly has an engine. The stretch becomes credible when it lives in what you do to someone, not in a mask you put on for them.

The short answer: keep the instincts, attention and emotional access that are yours. Build the unfamiliar role through objective, relationship, status, rhythm and specific physical behavior.

Keep your instrument, design the role

Split a sheet of paper into two boxes. In the first, list what comes with you: comic timing, stillness, quick thinking, warmth, severity or the way you take in bad news. In the second, list what belongs to this character: fewer gestures, a delayed answer, control of the doorway or careful attention to a set of keys.

Against type does not mean against yourself. Your existing instrument still powers the work. If you usually play open and friendly, that openness could make a prosecutor unsettling when they slide a glass of water across the table and wait for the witness to fill the silence.

Choose behavior you can repeat when the room gets tense. Closing a file before answering, making the other person sit first or keeping one hand on the door handle gives you more to play than a manufactured growl or a permanent scowl.

Start with want, relationship and rank

Put the sides on the table and circle three facts: what you need from the other person, who they are to you and who controls the space at the top of the scene. Those circles turn a label such as "powerful" into playable pressure.

You are not a generic executive talking to an employee. You may be facing the former friend who built the company with you and has placed a resignation letter between the coffee mugs. Your objective is to keep them, the relationship carries a betrayal, and your rank lets you leave the letter untouched until they reach for it.

Status is not a stiff spine. A high-status character might straighten one paper clip while everyone else scrambles. A lower-status character might pull the chair closer and speed up every reply to prevent an interruption. Pick a rhythm that changes the other person, not one that merely makes you look different.

Mine your reel for transferable proof

Open your reel and scrub the playhead without searching for the same job title. Look for ten seconds that prove a useful capacity: holding silence, making a decision, concealing information, shifting a power balance or staying precise while the room falls apart.

A comic scene can prove command if you recover from disaster without dropping the task. A family scene can prove menace if one quiet look makes someone put down a glass. Write the timecode, the visible behavior and its possible use in the new role on an index card.

Pick no more than two pieces of evidence to anchor the audition. Casting does not need proof that you have already played this exact person. They need a credible reason to picture your existing strengths inside these circumstances. Use the audition preparation guide to build the rest of the scene around that evidence.

Know where the stretch stops

Print the breakdown and mark each demand green, amber or red. Green is ready now, amber is trainable by the shoot, and red is a factual requirement that performance cannot manufacture. The page should look like a decision tool, not a dare.

Profession, social position, severity and authority are often playable through research and behavior. A safety-critical skill you cannot perform, a language level you do not have, an impossible date or a specific identity central to the story may be a hard constraint. Resting your fingers on piano keys does not make a live performance safe or convincing.

If one line is unclear, send your agent or casting a short factual question. Ask whether the skill will be doubled, whether the accent is essential or whether the date can move. Do not write a kitchen-table essay about how badly you want it.

Practical exercises

The keep and build page

  • Objective: separate your own instrument from the role-specific construction.
  • Steps: draw two boxes on a sheet, choose three qualities to keep and three behaviors to build, then touch the relevant box before each run of one page.
  • Result: your work remains recognizably yours while the unexpected role becomes visible.

The evidence scrub

  • Objective: locate transferable proof in your reel.
  • Steps: set your laptop on a table, watch three clips without sound and note gestures that show control, vulnerability, decision or threat. Restore the sound and keep the two moments that best serve the new scene.
  • Result: you base the stretch on observable work instead of wishful casting.

The three-pass test

  • Objective: find a playable bridge without drifting into caricature.
  • Steps: place a chair opposite a floor mark and run the same section three times. Change only the relationship, then the rank, then the rhythm. Drop any pass that depends on a fake voice or decorative mannerism.
  • Result: you find the version that expands your range without erasing your identity.

La Réplique as a rehearsal test

At your computer, La Réplique runs as a browser web app. You can import text or a PDF and select your role. AI voices read the other characters in French, English, Spanish, German or Italian, while speech recognition validates your lines.

Set a chair beside the desk and rehearse one pass through status, then another through relationship. Automatic prompts can feed the line when needed, and progressive masking can remove more of the text from the screen as you learn it.

The self-tape studio includes a share link and view tracking. La Réplique does not replace a coach or a human scene partner. When you are ready to frame the final version, work through the self-tape preparation guide.

Common mistakes

  1. Piling on character signals. You lower your voice, lock your jaw and hit the desk, yet nobody can tell what you need from the other person.
  2. Throwing away your proven strengths. You bury the warmth or dry timing already visible in your reel, even though it could make this authority figure specific.
  3. Treating a constraint as a confidence test. You claim a skill you cannot perform on set and hope the problem stays outside the audition-room door.

Summary

With the sides in your hand and a chair opposite you, keep what makes you responsive and construct what the role requires. Work through objective, relationship, status, rhythm and one physical behavior. Check the reel for proof, read the breakdown for hard constraints and never bluff a factual skill. Once the bridge holds, test the scene with La Réplique.

FAQ

What is an audition against type?

It is an audition for a role outside the lane casting usually sees you in. Your reel may place you behind a neighbourhood bar while the new sides put you at the head of a boardroom table.

Should I change my voice or body?

Do not change either one just to advertise difference. Start with a useful action, such as closing a folder to end the conversation, and let your voice and posture respond to that pressure.

How can I prove range without a similar reel clip?

Find adjacent evidence on the timeline: a held silence, a clean decision or a moment when you reverse the power in the room. The location and job can differ if the behavior supports the new role.

When is the gap a hard constraint?

It becomes hard when production needs a fact you cannot honestly or safely deliver. If the camera must hold on your hands during a difficult cello passage, carrying the bow into frame is not enough.

Which version should go in my self-tape?

Choose the take whose objective reads without a speech about your choices. Watch it on your laptop with the sound off for a few seconds and check whether the relationship and status remain visible in your gestures.
